The Colony is a city located in Denton County, Texas. The Colony is a suburb of the city of Dallas. In 2000, The Colony had a population 26,531. In 2010, its current population is approximately over 40,000 residents.
Before 1969, The Colony did not exist when home developers Fox and Jacobs purchased most of the land located around State Highway 121 and Farm Market Road 423. Fox and Jacobs planned the development of a new "dream city" modeled after the city of Dallas. The city was to consist mostly of single family homes grouped as a "colony". The development and the homes were to be served by a municipal utility district formed to bring water, electricity, cable television and telephone service. Later, in 1976, one of homeowners associations petitioned the Frisco to remove the area of the Colony from its jurisdiction. In 1977, a vote was held in and the City of The Colony was officially incorporated. The Colony is bordered by Lewisville and Lake Lewisville on the west side, and by Frisco on the north side, and by Carrollton and Plano on the east side. About 23 miles of Lake Lewisville are contained within The Colony’s city limits.
